Navigating the Complex Landscape of Sustainability Reporting: A Strategic Approach
If you’re finding the world of sustainability reporting a bit overwhelming lately, you're not alone. As businesses strive to meet various regulatory requirements and improve their ratings, the landscape can seem daunting. In this article we take a step back and consider the opportunity that exists for those who start early and take a strategic approach to their response.
It's Complex - But That's Where Strategy Comes In
First off, let's acknowledge the elephant in the room: sustainability reporting is complex and that’s not going to change anytime soon. The key is not to get tangled in the weeds but to step back and think strategically rather than just tactically. A strategic approach can unlock efficiencies and provide more value, making the ongoing reporting cycles less of a burden and more of an opportunity for growth and reputation enhancement.
What I am Seeing Out There
From my conversations with clients, one thing is crystal clear: many are spending an incredible amount of time scrambling to respond to supplier diligence requests and rating agencies. The pressure is real, and it’s time-consuming.
Then there’s the task of preparing to report against multiple reporting standards and frameworks. Just when you think you’ve got a grip on that, the United Kingdom announce that the International Sustainability Standards Board (ISSB) is coming in the form of the UK’s new Sustainability Reporting Standards.
This has led to discussions on interoperability. How can these different reporting requirements work more efficiently together? It's a puzzle.
The question then arises: how do you create a cohesive narrative that resonates with all stakeholders and clearly articulates how environmental, social, and governance efforts align with business growth objectives?
Finding the synergy between all of these things can save time and resources. Getting your external report right can even broaden your organisation’s access to capital and help attract talent.
Finding Your Starting Point
So, where do you start? Consider kicking off with these steps:
Understand your organisation’s financially material sustainability risks and opportunities: Before focusing on reporting requirements, take time to understand the sustainability matters that are most relevant to your organisation’s business model, strategy, operations and value chain. This means identifying the environmental, social and governance risks and opportunities that could affect financial performance, resilience, access to capital, stakeholder confidence or long-term value. The aim is not to create a generic ESG list, but to establish a clear view of the issues that matter most to your organisation and its stakeholders.
Understand the minimum requirements: Dive into the regulatory landscape and pinpoint its impacts on your organisation. Identify applicable regulations, whether reporting is group-consolidated or entity-based, and grasp their interoperability. Once compliance obligations are clear, focus on adding value by targeting priority suppliers and / or rating agencies and understanding their data needs.
Strategic framework refresh: Reassess your sustainability reporting framework once all requirements are known. Restructure your reporting to align environmental, social, and governance efforts with your businesses growth objectives. Prioritise a flexible framework that adapts to evolving needs while focusing on unique priority areas.
Create a stepped reporting plan: You don't need to report everything next year. Develop a three-year plan to prioritise action. Define minimum reporting requirements each year, use compliance deadlines as milestones, and map them to your framework. Assign business ownership and use the plan to inform implementation timing
Don’t wait for the perfect moment to start - building a strategic approach now puts you ahead of the curve and keeps you agile in the face of changing regulations.
